“Art, in any medium, equals internal space. Internal space is the foundation for freedom. Sometimes Art is the one shelter, the one freedom.”

I’m a local artist working in midcoast Maine. I paint in oil and acrylic and also have a ceramic practice that focuses on local wild clay. My freedom and justice theme work captures the emotions that I see reflected in people that project on leadership and are magnified by media.

“To me, justice and freedom mean having a voice, being seen, and being heard. Through art, I can express truths that words alone cannot hold. Art gives me the freedom to create without judgment and the justice of telling my story in my own way. It becomes both a healing space and a call for change—where color, form, and expression remind me that freedom is the right to exist fully, and justice is the promise that no voice is silenced.””

As a nurse who has worked in healthcare for 40 years, I’ve been committed to people’s well-being and the communities they live in. I believe diversity is integral to a healthy and vibrant community. With diversity under attack and the marginalization of large groups of our society, we are at a point in history where we cannot turn our backs or look away. My submission of a woman and child with barbed wire behind them represents the current plight of immigrants who have come to the United States.

Unity
Unity includes a time lapse picture of the Kaaba at Mecca during Hajj with an obelisk to one side. In the photo the pilgrims are blurred into one big, unified circle of humanity.

Stands alone
In life, when obstacles and hardships arise, it is important for us to realize that we have inner warriors that help us get through difficult times. In this multi-media self portrait series, we had the children explore their inner warrior. They chose a word to describe their strength or focus.
The Process: Abstract painting for the background using masking techniques, face painting & photography for the portrait and photoshop to put the different media together to create one powerful image.
Warrior series
